Quick Tips for Photo Portraits

You don’t always need a professional photo studio and studio lights to take good portraits. Here are a few tips for interesting and natural-looking portraits for your next photo shoot.

A great way to show someone’s personality and spirit is through environmental portraiture, which allows you to focus on the subject in his or her usual surroundings. Rather than taking the picture at the subject’s eye level, consider shooting from down low or up high for a photograph that really makes a statement.

If you don’t have access to private space with diffuse light, then steal one. If you head to your nearest art museum or university, chances are you’ll immediately find a room with plenty of light pouring in through vast skylights. Photo shoot locations don’t get much better than the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

If you’re shooting your subject outside, it’s best to choose an overcast day. If it’s a sunny day, you’ll need to use a reflector or an electronic flash to avoid your subject appearing with dark shadows beneath his or her eyes – although if you’re photographing hikers or gardeners whose natural habitat is the outdoors, shadows can be acceptable.
