What is Strobe Equipment?

A strobe light is basically a flash tube which surrounds an incandescent light bulb. Strobe lights are used in photography to replace regular camera flashes; strobes flash quickly so they eliminate blurring movements and compensate for camera shakes.

Strobe equipment can be used indoors or outdoors; strobes produce a lot of light, eliminate shadows and can give subjects a polished look. Strobes are portable so they can be carried easily to photo shoots.

There are two main types of studio strobes: monolights and powerpacks. You should use strobes that are around 400 to 600 watts, have fast flash times and can achieve full power in 2 seconds or less.

Because strobe lights produce strong, harsh light, you’ll need an umbrella or softbox to bounce light off and soften the effect on the subject. Hold a flash meter next to your subject; this will tell you what shutter speed and f-stop you need while using the strobes.

Strobe lights can be expensive to purchase but can be rented from photo equipment rental New York services for as little as $25 a day. Rented monolights usually come with a stand, umbrella, reflector and sync cord.
